24 hour turn around

back in LA for less then 24 hours. unpacking my sand filled suitcases and breaking out the scarfs and jackets for portland. mexico was an incredible adventure, i couldn't have wished for a better birthday present. (thank you j). we had an inspiring group of people and despite a little montezumas revenge....the trip was top notch.

2 more days until our trip! ridiculously excited for some much needed sun and sand. even though we live a hop skip and a jump from the beach;) this week has been full of preparations, and the time has just flown on by. i can't think of a more perfect way to spend my 30th birthday then a trip to mexico with my love and friends. we have decided to brave it and share one suitcase, which has definitely proposed a challenge. however, this suitcase has been all over the world with me and back, so i am confident in my rolling and tucking skills:) i recommend anyone who travels often purchases a luggage scale, saves so much time and money!

i made quite a few trips to pikes place in seattle just so i could have one of these cookies in my purse at all times. i will admit i fell in love. i tried to re create this cookie last year with josh- turned out amazing! i filled the entire house top to bottom with these lovelies. well, a few weeks ago my girlfriends and i made cookies for the la fundraiser bake sale for japan. i couldn't remember this recipe, but thanks to my seattle bud jon who ran down and snapped this picture for me....these cookies didn't make the bake sale, but i will definitely be making them very very soon.

this past tuesday we made home-made from scratch grilled cheese and tomato soup, with some faerie tale theater and final chapter of mildred pierce. words cannot describe the taste of our gluten free bread we made! I think the rosemary olive oil just may have been the magical ingredient. this is a weekly occurrence for us, and i think i just might start posting all of our delicious gluten-dairy free meals as well. ..

and welcome to 2011. january was ok, not quite the start i wanted for this year, but why not make every month a new start to the year.
someone recently said to me these words that really actually make a lot of sense, don't compare your insides to somebody else's outsides. i've heard this before, but sometimes it helps to hear things a second, or even third time. it can often be way too easy to think this way, especially in this town, but it is absolutely not fair to your insides. instead of getting caught up in what everyone else is doing, we must try and remain true to ourselves, and what is important in our own lives. energy towards the connections we make with others should take precedence over energy that goes into any negative thoughts about what or who those 'others' are.

my unexpected and annoying trip to the dentist got me to thinking about this. i suppose it was because it was the very last place i wanted to be, and it was the very exact place i needed to be for myself.

with that being said, february i embrace you and welcome whatever it is that comes my way this month.

we spent a much needed 2 weeks out of town for the holidays, which really was the best way to start/end our year. az was wonderfuly warm with goofie golfing, family, pizza making, baking a banana mousse pumpkin tart for christmas dinner(thanks tori!) lots of 3d glasses wearing, topped with an amazing christmas morning before heading to the airport. we arrived in ohio to lots of family, snow, yummy treats, and a nice warm room with our very own christmas tree. literally. we were all over it;). i loved ohio, i loved everything about it. i loved that it was my first white christmas, i loved that it was with my favorite person,i loved that he gave me one boot, i loved that one day we were in russian fur hats, and the next we were in flip flops. i loved that j ice skated knowing that it was something he really couldn't do. i loved having no schedule and sleeping in every morning. i loved all the movies and shopping. i loved spending time with his family and can't wait to go back. i loved spending new years at the house together making our second pizza on our trip while drinking wine..and starting 2011 in the most splendid way possible.

i am a huge advocate of change. its not that i get bored easily, i think it has something to do with the feelings of new/fresh/exciting/growth

i felt the urge for a big change this month, and the first thing i turned to was my surroundings. aka my house. my bedroom was the first project. i once read that the direction your bed faces has a lot of meaning, so i moved my bed every which way until finally settling on the east. then my office got a makeover, and a few other rooms. i stopped at my garage. thats a huge change i am just not quite ready for. so big it doesn't even fall into the category of change. the words would simply be major cleaning.

mind: my mind has been so clouded with school lately. the yoga classes are a wonderful calming break, but i need more. i have a ridiculous amount of wonderful half read books. i have decided to pick just one and read it in between my required readings. i have always been a huge fan of getting caught up in a book, and i miss it.

body: up next, physical change. once upon a time i discovered pilates plus and had full blown love affair. i took classes all across town until finally settling down with my favorite west hollywood location. i went so often they reduced the price for me. $200 a month on classes was getting pretty steep. an expensive love affair. so, in addition to my already 2 yoga classes i am committed to a month, i am adding pilates back into the mix.

Shining through the Clouds
Grumps

Grumpy people can only affect your mood if you allow it. The sun and stars can still shine in their presence.

When we're in a good mood, we shine like the sun. But if we find ourselves in the presence of a person, or people, in a grumpy mood, it can feel like a dark cloud approaching to dim our radiance and block our positive way of seeing the world. We can remind ourselves that clouds pass, while the sun and stars continue to shine above. Then it's easier to think of these "grumps" affectionately, knowing that they only have the power to affect our mood if we allow it. With the power of change firmly in our hands, we can choose how to respond to a grumpy person, or a grumbling group of people, with confidence and understanding.

Like a lighthouse, we can continue to shine through the darkness, offering our light to help others find their way back to their own. We can send them a silent prayer of peace or a sympathetic smile. We may sense that reaching out to offer a comforting touch or hug can ease their frustrations and cause the clouds to dissipate. If they need understanding, we can sympathize without reinforcing the negativity they may be experiencing by directing their attention someplace more positive. Helping them find the humor in their situation might be appropriate and is a great way to lift spirits, or a logical approach may help them see all the good in the situation, in their lives and in the world.

We might find that someone we encounter often seems to be in a perpetual state of gloom. Our tendency in such cases may be to try to avoid them, but instead we can make the choice to offer support that comes from the heart. We may be inspired to ask if they would like some help or to offer suggestions that have helped us in the past. We can include thoughts of their health and happiness in our times of prayer and meditation. When we lend our energy to uplift another in any way, we improve our own lives while making the world a better place for all of us.

i think that lately i just might have fit into the "grump" category. it happens to us all at some point, and the positive side is being able to recognize it, ...and then change it. join the shining like the sun crew. sometimes the weight of everything falls on us at once, almost a suffocating feeling. to-do lists taking over our days, deadlines (in my case homework), the mind behaving like the hare, and the ridiculous envy of those who always seem so relaxed. so today...i ripped up my to do list, made myself a nice relaxing aloe drink, don't have any Wednesday deadlines, ...and the sun just so happens to be shining.

letting go of understanding

Deeper Meanings

Sometimes we are not always meant to know the deeper meaning of certain occurrences and need only move forward.

All of us who seek to be conscious and aware regard our experiences as teachers, and we try to discern what lessons we are learning from the things that happen in our lives. Sometimes the lesson is very clear from the get-go, and other times we have to really search to understand the deeper meaning behind some event. While this search often yields results, there also comes a point in the search where what we really need to do is move forward. It is possible that we are not meant to know the deeper meaning of certain occurrences. Answers may come later in our lives, or they may come as a result of letting go, or they may never come.

We are all part of a complex system of being, and things work themselves out in the system as a whole. Sometimes we are just playing a necessary part in that process with a result larger than we can understand. It may have very little to do with us personally, and while that can be hard to understand, it can also free us from overthinking the matter. Sometimes it is best to see it in terms of karma, a past debt we have been able to repay in this way, or as the clearing of energy. We can simply thank the event for being part of our experience and let it go. This completes the process that the occurrence has made possible.

To make this letting go official, we can perform a ritual, make a final journal entry on the subject, or sit in meditation with the intention of releasing the event from our consciousness. As we do so, we summon it one last time, honoring it with our attention, thanking it, and saying good-bye. We then let it go out the door, out the window, out the top of our heads, or into the earth through the bottoms of our feet, liberating ourselves from any burden we have carried in association with it.
